Fortana

Fortana

Sensations, aromas and flavours linger in the memory, while the shape of events fades to become one with myth and legend.

A precious gift was brought as a dowry to the Este court. The first Fortana vine is said to have reached Italy thanks to a noble marriage, and to have immediately forged the great love of the Ferrarese people for the generous grape from France.

The territory

The Fortana is grown in a sandy soil which gives the grapes a marked minerality and a characteristic marine tang.
The coastal area of the Ferrara province gives its wines their unmistakable identity and these lands that man fought hard to wrest back from the sea are today covered with lush vineyards.

It was thanks to the noble house of Este that the Fortana grape immediately achieved its lasting fame. When visiting the centre of Ferrara, after exploring the castle and the cathedral don’t miss out on Italy’s oldest osteria, where local wines have been served for centuries.

History and traditions

But another fact in the history of the Fortana wine has contributed to its ties with the local area; and that is how it accompanies so successfully the most famous and characteristic local delicacy, the eel.

Comacchio Lagoons, a paradise for nature lovers and scholars, are also abounding in fish, which is part of the history and tradition of these lands.

The restaurants in the valleys and in the small town known as “little Venice” always serve eels with a glass of Fortana. It offers confirmation to those who already know this excellent Emilian wine and a pleasant surprise for those who come across it for the first time.
